Basic Home Appliance Troubleshooting: What to Check

Appliance failures often stem from simple user errors or maintenance oversight. Calling a professional costs a service fee even if the fix is flipping a switch. Run through a basic checklist before scheduling a repair.

Power and Breakers

The most common issue is a lack of power. Vibrations can wiggle plugs loose. Check the outlet. If the plug is secure, check the breaker panel. A tripped breaker sits in the middle position. Flip it fully off, then back on. For outlets in kitchens and bathrooms, press the “Reset” button on the GFCI outlet.

Dishwasher Not Draining

Standing water in a dishwasher usually points to a clog, not a pump failure. The filter at the bottom of the tub collects food debris. Remove and clean it. Check the air gap (the small cylinder next to the faucet) or the garbage disposal connection. A blocked disposal prevents the dishwasher from draining.

Refrigerator Not Cooling

Dusty condenser coils cannot release heat. Locate the coils at the bottom or back of the fridge. Vacuum them with a brush attachment. Ensure the vents inside the fridge are not blocked by food containers. Air must circulate to maintain temperature.

Washer Not Spinning

Modern washers have safety sensors. An unbalanced load stops the spin cycle to prevent damage. Redistribute heavy wet items manually. Also, check the lid switch. If the little plastic tab on the lid is broken, the machine thinks the door is open and will not run.

Dryer Not Heating

If the drum spins but there is no heat, check the lint trap and the exhaust vent. A clogged vent restricts airflow and triggers the thermal fuse to cut heat. Cleaning the ductwork often solves the problem and prevents a fire hazard.
